Personal Statement for Cory Holifield Standing at the front of the class, my nerves grew from a small, nagging annoyance to rampant thoughts of failure, causing me to scramble, my memory of the topic becoming fuzzy. My groupmate made his closing statement, which signaled to me that the hard part of our presentation was only just beginning. Watching several of my peers’ hands raise, it sunk in that the questioning phase of our presentation, and the only phase we could not thoroughly prepare for, had commenced. It was at the beginning of my Spring 2015 semester that I decided to commit my efforts toward earning a law degree. Though that may seem short notice, it was certainly a heavy decision that was mulled over in my mind for quite some†¦show more content†¦One groupmate would be in charge of preparing a PowerPoint presentation and acting as an interpreter, introducing the case and facts. The other was to represent the labor union’s side of the case, coming up with the opening statement and a rebuttal to my opening statement. That left management’s side of the case, which would be presented by me. A couple of weeks before our presentation, it was time to start looking over my chapter and figuring out what facts could be used to build a strong case. Reading through it, though, there appeared to be an apparent winning side already. Unfortunately for me, it was not mine. At the time, I was working 40 hours a week and taking a 15 hour semester, so, for a few days, every night after work was spent poring over the case. Coming up with a solid argument was going to be necessary, as it was clear that this case had a lot of emotion tied to it, which did not work in my favor, and most of my audience’s questions would be geared towards me. Finally, after straining for several days to figure out a way to justly defend my side, one of the facts in the chapter popped out at me. That one inconsistency created a slippery slope of half-baked facts, and suddenly my case had been made. The days leading up to my group presentation, my confidence was soaring in regards to my defense. I had practiced my lines and put in the effort to ensure my presentation would go off without a hitch. However,
